NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE Protesters travelled by the coach load from Cornwall during Saturday 20th June, 2015 in order to participate in the march through London. Joining the tens of thousands of other people, several members of the Kernow Branch Celtic League were amongst the demonstrators peacefully protesting against the government's ongoing austerity measures. Organised by the 'People's Assembly Against Austerity' group with the support of trade union UNITE and many others, the Cornish contingent attended a rally outside the Bank of England before marching to the Houses of Parliament. League members held aloft large St Piran flags and the iconic National flag of Cornwall was captured on many television transmissions including 'Russia Today' and quickly spread to social media. Cornwall continues to rate as one of the most impoverished parts of Britain in company with the Welsh Valleys despite the false lure of tourist generated income. The current and forthcoming cutbacks are hitting the Duchy hard with public libraries and many other essential services facing shutdown with worse yet to come. One of several to make the long journey was Branch member AW who helped to bear one of the large Piran banners. After the event, she said, 'It was very peaceful procession and what an honour for me to fly our flag. I am still beaming!' Another League member who attended, AKT remarked, 'I saw no violence and not even one cross word with any of the police!' Meanwhile, JE, also a Kernow Branch member said, 'I watched the newscaster speaking to a guest on the BBC who was an ex chief police officer who kept saying it was looking orderly with marshalling working well, but the BBC guy kept on and on asking 'Well what if it gets violent? What about aggressive elements?' It was almost as if he was hoping for trouble! The demonstration was attended by large contingents from Wales and Scotland all of whom carried their National flags and it was noted that there were considerable numbers of nurses, doctors, teachers, paramedics and even off duty police officers taking part. Concurrent demonstrations took place in George Square , Glasgow and in Cardiff as well as elsewhere and an earlier rally took place in Truro , Cornwall on 6th June, 2015 this latter event being extremely well supported by Kernow Branch members.
