For the second year running, members of the Kernow Branch of the Celtic League were invited by the office of the Lord Mayor of Caerdydd/Cardiff, Cymru/Wales to attend the annual Dewi Sant/Saint David's Day parade on 1st March.
Several members and non members attended the event, which also included a pipe band from Breizh/Brittany for the first time. The Dewi Sant Parade is growing in popularity each year since its inception in 2005, as the day of the Welsh patron saint is becoming more widely known internationally.
In 2003 in the United States, St. David's Day was recognized officially as the national day of the Welsh, and on 1st March the Empire State Building was floodlit in the national colours, red, green and white.
This year Dydd Dewi Sant/Saint David's Day was celebrated in Disney Land Paris and Google even noted it on its Google search engine. This year the Parade in Caerdydd received funding from the Welsh Arts Council and support from the Welsh National Assembly Government/Senedd, who are keen to see the day become a public holiday. A poll in 2006 found that 87% of the Welsh wanted it to be a bank holiday, with 65% prepared to sacrifice a different bank holiday to ensure this.
However, on being presented with a petition in 2007 asking for Dydd Dewi Sant to be made into a public holiday in Cymru/Wales, the Westminster Government flatly rejected the request. Last week Business Minister Lord Jones of Birmingham told peers:
"The present pattern of bank holidays in the UK is well established and accepted and the government have no current plans to change the arrangements."
