SCOTTISH POLICE AND PRISONS FACE CoE SCRUTINY The Council of Europe (CoE) body which carries out inspections of Prisons and Police stations (The Committee for the Prevention of Torture ? CPT) paid a visit to the United Kingdom last month. The visit focused in particular on a number of police stations and prisons in Scotland. It is seven years since the last visit by the CPT to facilities in Scotland and on that occasion their report was critical of both the police and prison service. The full report on the (2003) inspection can be found here: (voir le site) Detail of the most recent inspection in the form of a press release from the CPT can be found here: (voir le site) It will be interesting to see, once their conclusions, are published if a the shortcomings previously identified have been address. If not the Scottish government will have some explaining to do! J B Moffatt (Mr)
