NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The International Maritime Organisation has responded to a concern about adherence to IMO Resolution A709(17) which concerns the interaction between fishing vessels and submarines (see link). The League had raised the issue of adherence to Resolution A709(17) with submarine operating powers earlier this year, but the issue received a new impetus following the ?snagging? of the Co. Down based fishing vessel ?MFV Karen? by an unidentified submarine in April 2015 off the west coast of the Isle of Man. In the reply from the Assistant Secretary General (A Winbow Maritime Safety Division) the IMO say: ?On the issue of the interaction between fishing vessels and submarines (IMO Resolution A709(17)), I note your recent correspondence with some IMO States and the positive assurances received from Germany. In the regard, the Organisation will continue to encourage adherence to the resolutions adopted by the Organisation.? The ?assurances received from Germany? are so far the only positive responses received from submarine operating powers in relation to A709 (17) (see link).
