NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE EVANS RETIRES BUT NO MEMOIRS ON FRU EXPECTED SOON It is doubtful if Jonathan Evans, whose retirement as head of MI5 was confirmed today, will be spending his new found spare time writing about his time with the infamous Force Research Unit (FRU) during his time in Northern Ireland. Evans was one of a number of British Security Service apparatchiks who used their period of `service' in Northern Ireland to advance their careers ? in his case rising to the pinnacle of one pillar of Britain's Secret Services. FRU had a murky history indeed many believe it stoked some of the violence in the six counties and also facilitated some of the still unresolved bloody forays British security forces and the loyalist paramilitary gangs run by them into the twenty-six counties. FRU was also alleged to have been involved in the assassination of 14 Roman Catholics during a period between 1987 and 1991. It was also reputed to have had a hand in the deaths of a number of leading loyalists. Jonathan Evans was reputedly known as `Bob' to those he worked with in Ulster. (See Celtic News 2661 - MI5 - SOMETHING OF A CREDIBILITY PROBLEM ON TERRORISM!). (voir le site) However in an interview with Channel 4 News some years ago he denied this. FRU and the period that it operated in Ulster is a black episode in the history of British involvement in Ireland, however (as we said) do not expect much light to be cast on it if Evans does get down to writing his memoirs. Oh to be a `fly on the wall' at the reunion of old FRU men ? those of them that are left that is! J B Moffatt (Mr)
