It has been revealed that Garda operations in connection with the Gas pipeline and terminal dispute in North West Mayo have cost a staggering 5.4 million Euro so far.
The shocking statistic was revealed following a parliamentary question by Dr Jerry Cowley, TD. It indicates that the daily Garda operational costs are almost €30,000.
The Irish taxpayer is in effect being asked to pick up the tab for policing Shells highly unpopular development at a time when there are already serious concerns in Ireland and Internationally that the conglomerate exploiting gas reserves of Ireland's west cost is engaged in the biggest State endorsed 'rip-off' in Irish history.
The obstinacy and ignorance of the Irish government in relation to this matter is palpable.
It should be the case that the government is using its legal powers to renegotiate the deal and insist on satisfactory environmental protection measures to meet community concerns. Instead of this the State has turned part of its police force into little more than 'company cops' for Shell deploying them in a manner which has brought opprobrium on the Irish government both at National and International level.
