NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Celtic Congress is being held this week in Ireland at Rosscarbery in West Cork hosted by the bodies? Irish branch The Congress, unlike the Celtic League, focuses on cultural issues relating to the Celtic countries and there will be a series of events throughout the week. Each National delegation has sent speakers and musicians and each night there will be sessions, music and dancing culminating with a grand concert on the closing evening (Friday 25th) where representatives of each country will give a flavour of their National culture. Tomorrow (Wednesday) delegates will decamp for the day to Cape Clear where an ecumenical service will be held at the Church of St Kieran (known in Wales, Brittany and especially in Cornwall as St Piran where he is the National saint and where St Piran?s day is held annually). In a slight tilt towards 'the political' for the Congress a series of lectures will be held daily on the theme ?What is National Freedom?. Speakers include Keith Bush from Wales, Irish language author and columnist Alan Titley and also Phillip Gawne a Minister in the Manx government. Many members of the Celtic League are also active in the Celtic Congress and will be present for this years gathering in West Cork. Unlike the Celtic League (which does not accept external funding) the Congress is sponsored by governments, businesses and cultural agencies and the West Cork event is partly funded by Foras na Gaeilge, Cork County Council, Fáilte Ireland and IPB Insurance.
